Neutral Items for a Holiday Theme

Recently I talked a little about finding your theme for decorating around the winter holidays and what it means to hone in on that theme and stick to it. Oftentimes, people just put up whatever they own for the holidays and do the same thing year in and year out. Other times, they try to switch it up and incorporate some new decorations with the old. Most of the time this causes a distinct difference in the overall theme, which can make your home look a bit disjointed or “off.”

That’s why it’s important to stick to whatever theme you’ve picked out and make certain that nothing stands out from the crowd. For example, if you’ve used some shipping supplies to make crafty decorations with your children for your tree, it’s good to note that those same crafts should go elsewhere around the house as well. Or, if you want it to be a one off item, make it look like it doesn’t stand out as much.

But today, I wanted to talk about some common items that are neutral enough to work with any theme. These decorations are safe for pretty much all themes for that very reason, and so it’s worth getting more of them if you don’t already have some. Let’s hop in.

Garland

Everyone has generic garland and wreaths, right? (If you don’t, get some ASAP.) No matter if you dress it all up or leave it bare, garland is fantastic for maintaining a theme of your choice while also remaining festive and neutral. And garland works anywhere in your home. And remember the crafty shipping supplies we talked about earlier? Go crazy with it on your garland!

Candles and soft lighting
What could you possibly do to make a candle not fit a theme? Other than having the entirely wrong color for a candle or having something that smells foul, you should be golden on these. Just make sure each room has a few (though you don’t have to light them all) and you’re set for your potpourri.

Stockings
I know, I know. A lot of people love to keep the same stockings they always have. And that’s definitely an option if you just aren’t into the idea of getting new stockings every so often. But hear me out on this. I think that if you’re going to tie a theme together quite nicely, the finishing touches would be having stockings that fit that theme. If you’re going for a hunter or rustic theme, buffalo plaid stockings are a perfect fit. But if your theme is more candyland gingerbread, it’s better to find brown stockings that have plush candies on them or some sort of iced look to the edges. And think of it this way: if you have a handful of different stockings, you can rotate your themes every so often and never have to get new decor!
